Superhero YA Novel that Adults Will Love Too
The Extraordinaries is a YA novel about a high school boy who wants to become someone greater.
This book has a bit of romance and a bit of sci-fi/fantasy. It’s also a book about a boy with ADHD who comes to see it as a quasi super power.
Nick Bell’s mom died two years ago and he and his dad have reached a tentative new normal. Seth had problems at school that have been blamed on his ADHD. Also, Nick has become obsessed with an Extraordinary named Shadow Star. In the slightly altered universe that is this novel, Extraordinaries are real people with special powers and disguises. And capes.
Nick goes to school in “Nova City” and has a small group of besties—Jazz and Gibby, who are girlfriends, and Seth, Nick’s longtime best friend.
The group feels like a real group of friends from high school. Nick is believably neurodiverse. And the romance between Nick and [redacted] feels similar to one I had at his age.
This book was a surprise. I knew it was good but I didn’t expect it to be this great. It was adorable and gripping.
