I went into this one mostly blind. The conversations between the characters can come off as overly clever in a sitcom-like way and the colorful descriptions can lean toward kitschy, but it all worked out remarkably well. This book is just a ton of fun and has a cheerful, vibrant atmosphere and good sense of humor. I really like T.J. Klune’s writing style, it’s very easy to get into. The concept is pretty unique, melding the down-to-earth life of its main character Nick with the more zany hijinks of a superhero story. The transitions between real life and fan fiction portions are pretty smooth and tonally consistent. What I liked most though is the romance- it’s so warm and bubbly and engaging! A first chunk of the book hints at a love triangle but there are some twists to keep it fresh. I won’t reveal the main couple due to spoilers but I’ll just say they totally won me over and there aren’t enough “awww’s” in the world to describe how lovely it was to see them get together. I’ll definitely check out the sequel. In closing, The Extraordinaries is a great choice for anyone looking for a light and easygoing read. It’s extra nice when coming off of something darker or heavier. Highly recommended.
