An intriguing superhero story

This is a hard review to write. There were so many things I loved and things I hated. I honestly couldn't put the book down.

What originally drew me in was the cringey fanfiction in the beginning simply because I used to write those kind of fanfics. I still have them.... somewhere. I had mixed feelings about most of the characters. I honestly couldn't connect with most of them for the majority of the novel. Maybe that's just because I'm a decade older than most of them.

I didn't appreciate the jokes and insinuations that some older characters (mid 20s to mid 30s) were into the teenage characters. Yes, a lot of the jokes were "Ewww you weirdo" but it just seemed so... wrong. Especially when at least one of the characters was definitely not into the main kid.

T.J. Klune did encompass the thrill of superheroes and supervillains fighting. The parallels between the beginning and the end was beautiful (although maybe didn't need to be commented on by the characters so often). The reveal of each identity was amazing. Yes, you will be able to figure out who is who, but for a bit it was unclear which identity went with each.

The love story was nice. I was honestly thrown by how utterly oblivious Nick was to how his best friend felt (this really isn't a spoiler because it's insanely obvious). And the fact that nobody said anything for the longest time irked me to know end. They kept hinting and everything, but no one would actually spell it out.

I am pleased overall with this novel. And the way it ended... ugh I actually need a sequel stat
