The book is pitched as Rainbow Rowell's "Fangirl" meets Marissa Meyer's "Renegades," and I do see the comparison. Nick is like a gender-swapped Cath. However, unlike Cath, Nick felt immature through a lot of the book.
The Extraordinaries" has a very diverse cast of characters. Nick is gay, Seth, (one of Nick's friends), is bi, and Jazz and Gibby, (Nick's other friends), are lesbian. While there is a ton of diversity, it felt unrealistic in a way. Yes everyone needs to be represented, but that many lgbtq+ teens going to the same high school felt unrealistic.
Another issue I had was the cover. The cover seems like "The Extraordinaries" is a contemporary book, but it's more fantastical realism. I think a darker color palette matches the feel better.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I can see it being a bestseller!
