I haven't read Lunde's The History of Bees, but from what I can tell The End of the Ocean isn't a sequel, just follows a similar dystopian, environmentalist theme. So I didn't have any expectations regarding this book.

With separating a book into more than one storyline, you run the risk of writing one that's more interesting than the other to, thus making half of your book more of slog to get through. This unfortunately was of my experience. At first, I was more interested in Signe's storyline, but over time I started getting impatient, and at no point did I come to care for her. Conversely, I got much more invested in David in Lou as the story went on, but since I also found the connection between their story and Signe's so... insubstantial, I questioned even more why I was wasting my time with her. I'll be honest, I speed read her parts a little over halfway through, and I'm not a very good speed reader

I thought the writing was okay, not anything special; being a translation, it depends on both the original writer and the translator's skills. Overall, it was okay.
