This book is a return to contemporary literature. Told in alternating chapters, this book is heavy on the emotion and nostalgia.

The David chapters are set in what is the present in this book: 2041. He and his child are searching for lost family members after being forced to flee something. The Signe chapters are set in what is the past: 2017. She's taking an ocean voyage. She's old and reminiscing on her youth.

I'm not sure this book would be for someone like me. I enjoy my American domestic thrillers. I appreciate a sexy vampire romp. But a book like this, set in some country with oddly-spelled words... I'm not sure I'd find it relatable or intriguing. Also, Signe's initial commentary on getting old depressed me right off the bat. I just turned 40 and I don't want to read about how invisible I am.

I think that people who enjoy a long, nostalgic, emotional book will enjoy this book. The writing is quite nice, but the topic may not be for me.
