The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. Murder flies and the flu they spread caused the downfall of society. The few people left must be careful when they are outside past sundown, lest the flies eat them up and leave a hollowed out carcass behind. Coming across a stranger is dangerous. People spend their lives hiding at home, but still lose their family anyway.
It took me a while to read this book. It is an easy read, but this book made me uneasy given the current circumstance. There is relief at the very end, but the book is upsetting up until that point. In this book the flies came, then the flu came, and now some other unseen affect of the flu is hurting people. There is no escaping the pandemic. Things only get worse. I often thought about losing my family while reading this book. I guess that makes it a good book because it makes me confront my current fears and see how the characters deal with them and find hope for living. After the last chapter of the book I ended up thinking the main character was silly for making the choices she did, and I thought that I would definitely not do that. However, after thinking about the ending for a while I began to feel almost comforted. I do not know how to say it without any spoilers, but this book is special to me. It increased my appreciation for existence, or a lonely life where you feel like you can't change anything important. It made me re-frame my life in a way that has been very helpful.
