First of all, this cover design is really cool. That’s what first sold me on this book.

The fly flu has devastated Earth, and the survivors hide from the monstrous swarms, who can either eat you alive or infect you to die later.

This book is narrated by three characters - Nico, Kit, and the mysterious Deliverer. Eighteen-year-old Nico lives in a cabin with her dying father. He’s begun talking about a mysterious portal he claims to have discovered just before the flies came. He sends Nico on a quest to find out if it holds salvation for them all. Twelve-year-old Kit lives in an abandoned movie theater with his mother and two others, when the death of one of their own pushes them out into the post-apocalyptic world.

The characters are gripping, and the death of one of them will punch you in the stomach. Out in the world, the characters find hope, love, despair and hate. The descriptions of the decaying buildings and the characters’ attempts to make sense of the pre-apocalyptic world will shake your view of our society.

This is a story within a story - of how tiny changes can have a big impact and how some things can’t be changed at all.
