"How long you'd been alive only meant something when life itself wasn't a luxury."

Can we say bleak? Argh, I wanted to love this one so much, and sadly, I just didn't. While there were parts of the book I really enjoyed, and I did become invested in a character or two, overall this book was just a huge dystopian joy-sucker, that sucked the life right out of my bone marrow.

We follow the narrative of three main characters here--Kit, a twelve-year old boy who was born in a movie theatre, Nico, an eighteen-year old girl who has lived all her life in an isolated farmhouse, and The Deliverer of unknown age, sex and purpose really. These three characters are living in a future American where flu flies have basically taken over the earth and killed most of the population. Do you understand the bleakness yet?

While I appreciated the way Arnold crafts this puzzle-like novel together (and I REALLY LOVE random kismet coincidences) overall there were parts that were extremely slow, and the end was so so unsatisfying. Maybe I just read this at the wrong time, and too close to the pandemic, but this one just didn't work for me.
