Interesting and Confusing at the same time

Swarms of infected flies have led to a post-apocalyptic world. The few that are left seem to come together to survive. I love the description and cover of this book, as it makes me curious to know more. The first look is slightly confusing, as it begins in pre-apocalypse, and with no warning, goes into post, with little information about how this happened. Aside from Dakota, there seem to be no repeating characters from the first few pages. Is she our hero? I hope to find out.
