It's all in Your Perception!
Sabrina's birthday is celebrated by her former fiance, Tobias, her best friend Jessica, her estranged father, her philosophy professor from college, Conrad and Audrey Hepburn. As we observe her reaction to those in attendance there is some discomfort among them as this menagerie tries to understand why they are gathered together. The author takes us through Sabrina's past as she relives her encounter and developing friendship with her college roommate Jess and the chance meeting with Tobias at an art show which was arranged by Conrad. This connection with Tobias leads to a relationship with many starts and stops. Weaving her history with the three most important men in her life and how they impacted her in both positive and negative ways.
This story is so unique and beautifully told as it views the way perception plays a role in our response to others and thus their response to us. Audrey Hepburn and Conrad are important as guides to enable this little entourage to see the bigger picture. We see the role that friendship also plays in growing and stumbling through life. Tobias and Jessica both challenged Sabrina as she enters into adulthood and at times she resisted their lead to her own detriment. This is a journey of love and loss. An exploration of the steps we walk through life, releasing our pain to embrace the next step to be taken.
I loved this story though at times, it invoked within me sad moments, where I viewed life from yet another angle. Audrey Hepburn and Conrad both act positive examples in moving beyond life's tragedies; they are foils to the pain that exists between Sabrina and her father, Sabrina and Tobias and Sabrina and Jessica. The impact of this book should not be casted aside. The insight it may provide you is worth the cost of admission.
