I can't quite put my finger on why I'm so into this admittedly short preview of The Dinner List. I think our protag, Sabrina, has a strong, relatable voice and the first person POV is executed well. The flow of the writing is gently sweeping and pleasantly delivered. Even in just a few short pages, I was drawn into this strange setup. Perhaps it was looking up Gregory Colbert's Ashes and Snow exhibit, that is heavily featured in the story: it truly is gorgeous and a little unsettling in its staging of animals and humans. (How did he achieve such positions with these large and wild creatures?) I don't know; I just feel like if I continue to read this story, I'll learn something, about myself, about connections. I like that feeling the story gave me. I want to know more about her old roommate and friend, Jessica, her old love interest, Tobias, her old professor, Conrad, and her old absent father, Richard. And, of course, on how and why Audrey Hepburn is there. I want to think more about which five people, living or dead, I would like to have dinner with. All-in-all, a very intriguing first look.
