This is a book that has affected me in a way that not many others have. Similar to War Girls, this book seems so.. historically relevant despite the fact that it is fiction set in the future. The Wajinru are descendants of pregnant slaves that were thrown into the ocean and born water-breathing despite their mothers' deaths. Together, they formed a society that is more about the whole rather than the individual. This story focuses on Yetu and her quest to find individuality, a sense of self, and eventually her sense of duty. Her ancestors did what they felt was needed to protect their pod but not she needs to figure out what to do to protect herself, yet not condemn the other Wajinru to the death she felt coming for so long. This story is based on a song and is so beautifully told.
