This novella is short but it covers so many complex issues. Yetu is a mermaid descended from African slaves. She is responsible for carrying the memories of her people. Her knowledge of the atrocities her ancestors experienced in the past becomes too much for her to bear. In the midst of her emotional turmoil, she releases the memories memories for her friends and family to grapple with while she flees her home. Her journey alone and then with a newfound companion allows her time and space to process her complex feelings. This story was beautifully written and lyrical. At times it was somewhat strange and challenging but those aspects of the book made it all the more impactful. I recommend it for those looking for a quick and striking read.
