Mermaid mythology and the horrors of slavery make a powerful combination in Rivers Solomon's The Deep, which manages to pack a powerful punch in this short story that builds upon the Clipping song "We are in the Future."

The story follows Yetu, who is struggling with the responsibility of holding the history of her people. It takes time away from her people and the remembering of their origin to find the meaning of the past and a shared identity - despite the trauma that it continues to create for past and future generations.

The writing is lyrical and it captures the water setting that Yetu calls home. It doesn't just focus on the dark of the deep, but also brings light and hope to the story that make you feel like you have taken a journey with the characters, and features queer representation. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys afrofuturism.
