I really had no idea what to expect when I decided to listen to this book on libro (thank you to libro & Simon & Schuster for the ALC copy).

This story is inspired by a song fromm Daveed Digg's rap group clipping. In this imaginative retelling, we met Yetu, a water-breathing descendant of Afrian savle women tossed overboard that built their own underwater society. Yetu is the "historian" of the society so she is tasked with remembering the trauma, violence and darkness of her people's origin story. Her role of being the sole person to remember so that the others can continue to live and thrive is excruciating for her. This novella gave me The Giver vibes with a more pointed lesson around slavery, racism and privilege.

I couldn't believe how well this story captured the trauma and themes of remembering in such a short time span. Beautiful, imaginative and heartbreaking. This was a great "read" or listen.
