This was such an interesting premise and the execution was fantastic! Who wouldn't want to pick up a book about water dwelling-mermaid creatures descended from African slave women? The amount of social commentary packed into such a small book was impressive, especially weaving it with the folklore and beautiful flowery writing! I'm very picky about flowery writing, and Solomon executes a perfect blend of beautiful description and imagery with mythical African folklore that breeds such an atmosphere throughout the novel.

While small and quick to read, The Deep is immensely powerful. As mentioned before, it packs such a large amount of commentary of slavery, and the deep roots it has not only in America, but globally. If you're looking for a unique read and lyrical writing, The Deep is perfect for you!
