Yetu is of the Wajinru, descendants of pregnant African women who were thrown overboard during the slave trade. She is Historian, holding the collective memory and history of her people; but the Rememberings are overwhelming with the pain that they hold. So she escapes from her people, and her responsibilities, to the surface. There, she finds perspective in an unexpected form.
The Deep is a very unique story inspired by a song of the same name by the hip-hop group clippng. (feat Daveed Diggs, William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes). I felt the story was a bit of a slow burn, and I had a hard time connecting with Yetu. However, the story is beautifully written. I was enveloped in the flowing prose from the very beginning. I loved the narrative from the perspective of the Wajinru as a whole, written in part from a unified perspective, focusing on the collective vs. the individual. The takeaway being hope, as a people there is power in sticking together, in remembering the past though it may be painful, we can distribute the weight and carry it equally.
