This was a supremely intriguing read. I'm still trying to figure out how to process my emotions.
Yetu is the Historian for the Wajinru, merfolk descended from African slaves thrown overboard. She alone holds the memories from the beginning of her people, but she doesn't want to. She wants to be herself.
This novel is a unique telling of merfolk. Rivers has a beautiful way of writing that draws readers into the story and I didn't want to stop. I did love the back and forth of memories and the present. However, with that it was occasionally confusing when it suddenly switched to memories.
Ultimately, this is a quick but beautiful read. I have not yet listened to the song this novel is based on, but I definitely plan to give it a listen.
