For readers who are saddened by thoughts of human slave trade, the premise of THE DEEP will have extra appeal. The unique premise of this novel is an underwater society which mysteriously developed out of the bodies of African women that did not survive the ocean crossings of slave ships. One aspect of the novel is reminiscent of Lois Lowry's 1993 YA novel THE GIVER: memories - or in this care "Rememberings" - are too painful for all society members to carry. Thus the task of remembering the stories of the deceased women who were thrown overboard like mere detritus has fallen to thirty-four-year-old Yetu. The preview chapters make me interested in learning how well the author develops the fictional histories to represent this tragic era of mankind's history.
