The first thing I thought of when reading this sample was The Giver by Lois Lowry. Yetu, the main character of this book, bears the responsibility of keeping her society's memories. The difference between The Giver and The Deep is that Yetu must annually share her memories with her people, because they are no longer able to maintain memories long enough to remember who they are and why they exist.

The writing here is detailed enough to evoke a strong sense of character and memory without being overwhelming. When Yetu had memories, I was dragged into them just as she was, and wanted to remain and see what she saw.

I was disappointed that this sample didn't give more of the larger picture of the story; it only focused on the exposition of Yetu's place in a society that I barely understand. Although I am aware that there will be a large Remembering in the coming pages, I'm not sure where the tension will come from, and where the story will go. But I am interested in continuing on with it!
