The premise and excerpt remind me of the themes of memory explored in The Giver, but that's not to say this is some kind of knock-off - quite the opposite, in fact. The origin and community history of this underwater world form a heartbreaking backbone to the story, and the notion that the wajinru who are not the Historian long for at least a little piece of memory is interesting. They want to be grounded in history, but not permanently - they leave that to Yetu, who is breaking under the strain. Will this be an Afrofuturism take on The Giver meets The Little Mermaid? Can't wait to read more!
