"She needed frequent reminders she was more than a vessel for the ancestors’ memories. She wouldn’t let herself disappear."

The writing is beautiful and I was swept away into this world beneath the surface of the sea. It didn't take long for me to fall for Yetu, our main character with the weight of her people on her shoulders -- or better yet, in her mind. So much remembering is done on behalf of her people, keeping the history for a people either unwilling or incapable of remembering themselves, at great detriment to herself. I admire her strength as well as her gentle defiance.

"One can only go for so long without asking who am I? Where do I come from? What does all this mean? What is being? What came before me, and what might come after?"

The worldbuilding is complex and layered, revealing so much about the world through Yetu's struggles in the two chapters I got to read. I am really intrigued as to why only certain waijinru can remember at all, and why Yetu appars to be overly receptive to memories.

"Her people’s survival was reliant upon her suffering. It wasn’t the intention. It was no one’s wish. But it was her lot."

I am looking forward to reading this book in full, and thank you BookishFirst for the first look!
