Everyone has been talking about this story since its announcement. After reading the first pages, I can comprehend all the commotion. Rivers Solomon has crafted a story that is a blend of both Octavia Butler's "Kindred" and Lois Lowry's "The Giver."

"The Deep" is a story about the consequences of remembering the existence of a community. In this case, as seen in the description, it's about the posterity of Africans who were captured by slave ships, who were then thrown overboard into the depths of the ocean. Old magic saved many of these people, but they evolved into creatures meant to survive within the ocean. Hundreds of years later, a "historian" is chosen every several decades to carry and to share the memories of their existence with each other. And, as some of us are aware, the stress of such memories could be traumatic. Hence, the story begins.
