The Davenports are a wealthy black family in 1910 Chicago. William was formally enslaved and moved north where he founded a carriage company. The book is inspired by a true story of C.R. Patterson family.

The Davenports is told in 4 POVs. Olivia Davenport is the middle child and older sister; Helen Davenport is the youngest; Amy-Rose is their maid; Ruby Tremaine is Olivia's best friend.

Wealthy black families are rare, they are constantly seen for their skin color first and are taught to rise above. I can only imagine how they really feel inside. If they lash out, they are giving them more reason to hate. If they don't, they are staying silent.

The girls are expected to play a certain role and maintain societal standards, not being able to be their own person or follow their passion. Learn to throw a party, how to behave like a proper lady, find a husband, take care of the household and children.

We learn more about each character and their true passions versus what their parents want and society expects. It's hard enough being a woman, even harder when they are women of color. This is a fantastic read about how strong these women really are and how they overcame adversities, all while also finding love where they least expect.
