The Davenports is Marquis’ debut novel and her first book in The Davenports series. It’s a Young Adult, Historical Romance following four Black women in 1910 Chicago as they navigate how to pursue their dreams, live up to parental expectations, and pursue romance.

My favorite part of the book is the family relationships. They aren’t one-dimensional, and Marquis writes touching moments for everyone. The most memorable one for me is when Helen is dancing with her father and she’s thinking wow, so this is what I’ve been missing during these balls? Dances with dad? And it’s sad and it melts my cold heart. I love when the siblings talk to each other about their problems too. Olivia and Helen reconnect after pulling away from each other because of their personality differences, and Helen and John are working on getting the family into the motorcar industry. Marquis writes these relationships well, which is why they are my favorite part of the story.

As for the romance, Marquis totally delivers. Absolutely swoon-worthy material. There are a lot of playful, flirtatious, sneaky, and scandalous moments that will make you squeal.

Some people expressed a little disappointment over the historical part of this romance because they actually wanted more history in the story, which is understandable. I see why people expected more history considering it’s a rare time period to set four romance plots in. For me, it’s not really an issue because I came in looking for swoon-worthy romance, but I get it.

4.5 stars from me!
