The Davenports is about a wealthy African American family living in Chicago in the early 1900's, their wealth earned through the founding and development of the Davenport Carriage Company. The parents, now middle age, have three grown children that are all figuring out their own paths in life, experiencing all the challenges and heartbreak along with it. This family, however, has the additional burden of expected etiquette, status, and wealth in the community, which plays a sizable role in the children's decisions and expected decisions by the parents. This is all taking place during a time of racial unrest and limited options for many African Americans.

The story itself is as much about family as it is romance. It's told from the perspective of four women - Olivia and Helen, the Davenport daughters; Ruby- Olivia’s childhood friend; and Amy-Rose, maid/playmate/friend to Olivia and Helen since early childhood. The story focuses on their love-interests and the men involved with them. All the characters are interesting and unique in their own ways. The story plot also captures the time period and typical experiences of the time. Although I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I was disappointed that it’s not a stand-alone also, as too much of the storyline is left unfinished for future books in the series.

I received an ARC copy of the book, and all comments and thoughts are my unbiased opinion. Thanks to #bookishfirst #TheDavenports #KrystalMarquis #DialBooks
