This book was such a different read than anything else on my shelf. I've seen historical romance/fiction, but I've never seen anything focusing specifically on a black family, so I loved this diversity.

This book has four different point-of-views. We have Olivia and Helen Davenport, Amy-Rose (a servant), and Ruby (Olivia's best friend). I felt like Marquis did an excellent job of balancing these point-of-views and making each character's voice stand out. This is a tricky thing to do, but this book nailed it on the head.

This book is really good at discussing the historical and how these characters want to change their position in society. I liked reading not only about the relationships between the characters, but the struggle to survive being black in this time period. It was a real eye-opener.

I think it's safe to say that this is the perfect thing to read for young adults who are interested in "Briderton." Plenty of drama and twists and turns.
