I reaaally wanted to like this one… it had everything I was looking for! Passion, romance, intrigue, Chicago during a pivotal point in its history. Unfortunately it just fell completely flat for me. I found the writing to be in a passive voice that became quite the snooze fest - even during exciting moments I could barely stay focused. The other main issue was that all characters had the same problem with their romance. This seemed really lazy to me and took away from any real sparks or tension. Because all four romances were carbon copies, I found myself forgetting who was who or even connecting at all. By the last half I was disengaged and by the final hundred pages I started skimming. I really did enjoy the first half of the book though, and wished it had led up to something more exciting. As this is the first in a series I don’t think I would go back for more, but maybe others out there will love what I wanted to.
