First of all, thank you Bookishfirst, Krystal Marquis, and Penguin Random House Publishers for an autographed arc of "The Davenports". When I read the "sneak peek", I was intrigued and knew that this was a novel that I wanted to read. Ms. Marquis did an outstanding job of developing interesting characters, a unique plot, and a setting that described the period in time quite accurately. In summary, the novel revolves around the Davenport family. They are unique as they are one of the few black families of extreme wealth in the United States during the early 1900s. The patriarch, William Davenport, is a former enslaved man who founded the Davenport Carriage Company years earlier. His carriages are known around the world as being one of the premier forms of transportation. He has two daughters and one son. Olivia is the oldest and is content with her station in life, that of marrying a man of wealth and being a dutiful housewife. Helen, on the other hand, wants to spend her days working on the carriages and new automobiles in her brother's garage. John is in line to inherit is father's empire. He is at odds with his father, as he feels the future is in the automobile industry and his father believes that the current success will continue. The novel follows their lives and love interests. I was sure that I had the outcome figured out. Boy, was I wrong! This would be an enjoyable read for YAs and adults alike. Definitely recommend.
