This story is being presented as a YA romance. Sure, there is romance and the main characters are young. But they aren't high school young and the romance plays a supporting role to a story about four strong women living in a time that doesn't necessarily appreciate strong women. This was a character driven story about four young women fighting to live their lives the way they wanted to in a society that limits both what women and Blacks can hope for. I think Helen was my favorite. She was the one who wanted to get her hands dirty and be active in the family business, well before that was seen as something suitable for a young lady. While reading I thought it was going to be predictable and for most of the story that was the case. Still, reading about these women struggle to be their true selves was worth the read. I was also worried that there would be a sappy tied-up-with-a-ribbon ending but I was excitedly surprised that it didn't. That being said, I could have used a few more pages as the ending did seem a bit abrupt.
