This is the first book in what looks to be an enjoyable series. The multiple POVs (4) was a bit confusing at times, but it did balance out as the story unfolded. The story touches on many important issues, including race issues, civil rights, family expectations, and love. The story felt rushed in some places, perhaps due to the fact that the author was trying to navigate developing storylines and romances for four characters. Upcoming installments may focus on just one main character, which would help this issue. Each main character (Olivia, Helen, Ruby, and Amy-Rose) is likeable and realistic. I enjoyed learning about a family in history (C.R. Patterson's family) that I wasn't familiar with prior to this book. Overall, there is a nice mix of drama and relationships to keep the reader engaged. Fans of Bridgerton and other period pieces may want to add this to their TBR piles.
