The Davenports is such a unique, historical young adult book. It follows the four young black girls at the turn of the 20th century in Chicago - The Davenport sisters, Olivia and Helen; the maid and friend, Amy-Rose; and their close friend, Ruby. They all are very individual and are all struggling to find their ways in a strict society, especially in a still very much segregated era. It was so different to read about a black family that is successful in this time frame, because it feels unheard of. And yet this story is based on the real life black-owned Patterson Automobile company. There are so many topics touched upon - activism, rioting, segregation, colorism, and sexism just to name a few.

I liked all the characters in this story. They were each their own person with goals and dreams and they have so much growth from beginning to end. We have struggle and finding one's self and deciding what we truly want regardless of others and family expectations. Each young girl does have a love interest... or two and there is definitely drama throughout all the relationships

While I liked this book a lot, it did take me a bit to get invested into the story. This might be more related to my mindset more than the writing or plot. It just felt a little slow to begin with and everything was fairly predictable - which isn't a bad thing, but also not very exciting. This is the first in a duology, so it is left with cliffhangers and being very open-ended.
