I have only seen part of the Bridgerton series, but like other readers, I noticed some similarities. Since it’s a historical fiction romance, I think there were bound to be similarities. However, The Davenports is a Young Adult book of all Black main characters, inspired by the real C.R. Patterson family. It is set in turn of the last century Chicago. It speaks to the inequalities related to their race and class statuses, as it is narrated by multiple perspectives (Olivia Davenport, Helen Davenport, Ruby (friend), Amy-Rose (works for the Davenport family). This genre isn’t one I typically gravitate to, but I did appreciate the historical elements embedded in the story. I personally wish it had been a stand-alone for some more closure, but I am sure others will enjoy the chance to get to know the characters further in future stories.
