The Davenports is an incredibly important story about Black success in Reconstruction-era Chicago. The story is about, well...the Davenports, a wealthy family who found their fortune making luxury carriages.

The story has a very Bridgerton-esque vibe in that it focuses on each of the siblings, sharing their hopes, dreams, and fraught love lives. The writing allows the reader to become almost immediately attached to the characters and perfectly shows how, even amongst the upper echelons of society, racism still pervaded as the country rebuild from the Civil War.

Most importantly, however, the story is crucial as a highlight of Black success, not the tragedy we often read about in post-Civil War America. I appreciated this difference as an additional nuance to history. A must read!
