I would have enjoyed it more if I'd read the Lux series first

This was my first book by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and my first foray into the world of the Lux. I think I might have gotten more out of this if I'd read the other books in the Lux series, because The Darkest Star seems to be a book that took a previous series and escalated things to the next level.

This reminded me of a cross between the TV show Roswell that was on in the late 90's/early 00's and the Twilight series. I really liked it (even if Luc was totally OP, and the majority of book was really just a whole lot of Luc and Evie trying to talk with lots of evasiveness and foreshadowing on Luc's part and then them getting interrupted over and over again...) and now I need to go read the Lux series so I can fully appreciate this book. It definitely reads as the first book in the series, and major parts of the story arc (including the Big Bad that's stalking Evie) are resolved, it also opens up a whole new story arc toward an even Bigger Bad that's coming (and scaring the pants off the Big Bad, BTW). I have definite plans to read the original series before more books in this follow up series come out.

While The Darkest Star is the first in the Origin series and can be read on it's own, I think readers will enjoy it more if they read the Lux series before reading The Darkest Star.
