Enter the world of the Lux – conveniently, they’re incredibly good-looking and have amazing powers. The downside? A few years ago they started a war that killed over 200 million people on Earth and now they’re barely tolerated in polite society. Humans and Luxen are not allowed to be together romantically, and there is talk of moving the Luxen out of the general population and into their own ‘communities’ (read: internment camps).

Then there’s Evie. She goes to a club with her best friend, meets the hottest guy she’s ever seen, kisses him in broom closet…and everything falls apart.

Luc has a lot of secrets, the least of which is what is really going on behind the scenes of his club. This is the first part where I found Evie to be really unbelievable. She has no natural curiosity. The ominous statements that her mom and Luc make to her about her father, Luc’s past, the connection between Luc and her mother…well, that’s mysterious, but no need to follow up on that.

Now how she reacts when she finally has the truth thrust upon her (because she apparently was going to be fine with living her life in the dark) – totally realistic.

But – really – she’s pretty damn helpless. She does gather some mojo at the end there and makes a pretty badass move, but it’s literally at the last second.

So what I’m getting at is, I guess that’s the reason that I don’t give this a higher rating. Evie is kind of boring, and most of the stuff in the book happens to her and around her, and she hardly reacts to any of it. I’m hoping that in future books we’ll see her toughen up a bit, somewhat like Clary Fray in the TMI series.

There were some things I really liked, like the way Evie learns about standing up for marginalized people, standing up to your toxic friends, and managing your relationships with people who have lied to you (even if they say it was for your own good). In that respect, the book had a lot of good messages. I just wish Evie had been a bit more active in other areas of the book as well.
