The Darkest Star continues the exciting and incredibly fun world of the Lux with a new spinoff which focuses on a new ‘breed’ of alien. With a mix of new and old characters, this series starter will appeal to both readers of the original series and newcomers alike.

Years after the war between Luxen and humans, they’ve reached a sort of tentative peace. The Lux wear bracelets that smother their powers, the government can breathe easier because the problem is “fixed”. When Evie Dasher is dragged to a club with one of her friends, she finds herself not only in a place filled by and run by Lux, but also right in the middle of a raid. The powers that be are sweeping everywhere for unregistered Lux, and the club she’s found herself in is their current target. Luckily for her, she’s helped to safety by Luc, a mysterious Luxen who both compels and infuriated her. Mostly infuriates, but she definitely can’t stop thinking of him. Something is different about him and while she can’t figure out what it is, she knows there’s more to him than he’s letting on. Luc is a man of many secrets, and most of his secrets are ones that will change Evie’s world forever.

The Darkest Star was such a fun read that left me with the biggest book hangover. The characters were so dynamic and multilayered, and were such an amazing complement to the multilayered and equally dynamic plot. And while parts of the mystery surrounding Evie leaned a little towards the predictable side, it certainly didn’t take away any enjoyment of this book. I’ve only read one book by JLA and I’ve been consistently rejecting my GR’s friends’ recommendations that I read more from her. They’re right and I’m seriously wrong for not heeding their advice.

All told, The Darkest Star was an incredible first installment in this new Lux spinoff and I can’t wait to see what the next book brings. The only good thing about not finishing the original series is that now I can binge them while waiting for the next book in this series. Highly recommended for both series fans and newcomers alike.
