This is the first book from the series that I've read, and it stands on its own, although I imagine it will be and should be read mostly be fans of the series who are working their way through all the volumes.

This definitely feels like a television series, a teen fantasy-adventure, and this particular volume could be, say, a multi-episode story arc.

Things happen that make crises, and then our teen heroes with essentially magical powers have to run someplace else and then run someplace else and then run someplace else.

This volume will probably reveal to long-time fans of the series important little tidbits of information about the wicked machinations that evil billionaires used to exploit their children or use a virus to use DNA to give children fabulous powers that would make them worth money for trafficking or use as scientific experiments.

But basically it's about teens meeting up with each other and having big, emotionally-charged conversations.

I found it most interesting towards the end when there were some adventurous bits of derring-do.
