It has been five years since Suzume "Zu" Kimura was imprisoned in a rehabilitation camp with other Psi, kids who have a wide range of abilities that the adults in charge feel can undermine "normal" society. Zu is now working as a spokesperson for the government, which is her attempt to spread the truth about other children just like her. When an engagement goes horribly wrong and Zu is blamed, she is forced to go on the run. She is helped by Roman and Priyanka, fellow Psi with secrets that they would like to keep hidden. As they go on a quest for the truth, will the true nature of those in power threaten the existence of the remaining Psi kids?

As Zu was one of my favorite characters in The Darkest Minds series, I was excited at her top billing in this novel. Despite the large gap of time between the end of the last series and the beginning of this one, the author did a good job of seaming the two together. The Darkest Legacy was a little too long, as the pacing slowed in the middle of the book. If it were a bit shorter, the story would have had more of an impact. I did like the introduction of the new characters, both friendly and foe, although some of my favorites were not prominently featured. Readers who are new to the world presented in The Darkest Minds should not start with this novel, as the series begs to be read from the beginning. I got the impression from the end of The Darkest Legacy that readers have not seen the last of Zu, so I look forward to the next installment in the series.
