Before I read The Darkest Legacy, I reread the Darkest Minds trilogy. While they weren't as good as I had remembered, they still had me really excited for this book. As In the Afterlight ends, the Psi kids just got freedom and justice. Reading that last page still makes me so happy. Then The Darkest Legacy happens. Set a few years later, the world has gone back to being a terrible place. Psi kids are still not treated properly, but now they have 'representation.' Zu, a shy girl from the original books, is now the main character, and she is no longer shy. She gets framed for a crime she didn't commit and goes on the run with two strangers (whom I adore). It's got a super slow burn romance and the return of all of your favorite characters (and villains) from the Darkest Minds 1-3! Bracken's writing has gotten so much better in this as well (not that it was bad in the first, but you can tell she has become a better writer), so it is an extremely wonderful read.
