I really am not sure what to say about this book sample.

Let me start with the basics: The book cover isn't the most appealing book cover that I have ever seen, but it is appealing and sinister enough to make me curious enough to read the book description. The book description is creepy, suspenseful, and sets the tone for a potentially amazing thriller. However, it is also a true crime type of book, which I am not really into hence the mixed thoughts and feelings.

The story initially starts out with this suspenseful, intense scene where a young guy is being confronted by an angry older guy driving a VW Beetle. From there the story builds. The author uses good adjectives but I was thrown off by the intensity and suspense of this initial scene. Why was the character so fearful from this single interaction? Is it the time period? It just seemed too dramatized for no reason. For me the rest of the sample pretty much followed this same pattern of having these really intense, suspenseful moments that seem unnecessarily suspenseful. Don't get me wrong...it was written well enough that I'd almost want to read the book just to see what happens but it felt like forced suspense. I'm torn so I gave it 3.5 stars.
