Hardboiled crime on steroids
This novel doesn't hold much back. Right from the beginning, it's gritty, raw, and graphic. The tone and voice is strong and unapologetic; there's no wimping around by John, he's one tough lawyer. For fans of Walter Mosley, this is a spot-on addition to the hardboiled crime genre. After reading just 15 pages, it has me hooked and wanting more. It's a book in which I can escape and will be captivated by the story and characters. I have no interest in trying to figure anything out; the author has done an incredible job at setting up a story in which it will be a pleasure to just go along for the ride. It's amazing that he managed to develop his characters so well in so few words and the setting is so vivid I felt like I was sitting in the bar when the body was found. I definitely can't wait to read this one.
