Hmm, I was a bit confused by the book. There were a lot of moments in them in which I really had to suspend my belief to try to get into it. For example: becoming an orphan and then .... dealing with what she has throughout the book, the main character seems almost... unaffected? I was surprised by the fact that she doesn’t seem to react much to the ordeals and traumas. I get that maybe she was unable to mentally and emotionally process that and maybe that’s why she just never seems to mention what a huge thing it was to suddenly become an ORPHAN and then like be subject to the whim of some super rich folks that mysteriously come into her life and adopt her or something?

However the book really did a really good job at creating a gothic atmosphere: the big estate with areas in disrepair, the aura of being suspended in time in the novelties throughout the house and the mindsets of the characters... those were strong. I know this isn’t meant to be hyper realistic but it’s just so far fetched that I just couldn’t immerse myself in it
