Maybe it's just me, but The Companion seems to have echoes of Du Maurier's Rebecca, without seeming like a regurgitation where things have been modernized or retold a little differently. Margot is left on her own when her family dies in a car accident and ends up a large, isolated house as a companion to Agatha - who suddenly went silent and borderline catatonic six months previously. Wanting to know why is compulsive, and Margot is a reluctant narrator who's going to figure it out - whether she wants to or not.
