Intriguing Beginning!
This is my first experience with Alender's writing, and I have to say, this excerpt sucked me right in! It wastes no time in bringing the characters to life with clear descriptions and details that work to have the reader feel as unsettled as Margot. Sole survivor of the accident that killed her entire family, Margot is unexpectedly picked up from the orphanage where she had spent the last 7 weeks to the lavish countryside manor of an old college friend of her dad's. But her new digs come with a hefty "but" - to stay, Margot must ask as the titular companion to their suddenly ill daughter. Agatha no longer speaks and can only maintain herself in guided tasks.
Well-written and with a clear direction on where the story seems to be heading, this has the markers of a breathless, one-sitting read!
