This book was not quite what I had expected. It was told in the point of view of 7 year old Amerigo. While reading there were moments that some of the content given did not seem to appropriately fit for the thoughts and expressions of a young boy. The writing style was also difficult to follow at times, similar to listening to a story narrated by a young child; so although realistic, it made reading it more difficult at times.
The story itself was sad and it broke my heart when Amerigo ran away and decided not to return. That could not have been an easy decision for such a young child. I felt a great deal of empathy for Amerigo, but also for his mother.
I wish there would have been more detail given to his life, but the books focus was on the children who were taken by train from their families and how some handled this differently and how it impacted this family.
