The Children's Train is about a little known event during the aftermath of World War II where parents in the south of Italy who could not always take care of their child(ren) to the best of their ability and sent them up north to families who could.

The book is about the experience of one young boy named Amerigo. He is scared of the journey north but once there forms a family with his sponsors. So much so that when he returns home to his mother he is so unhappy he runs away back to them.

Other children never even bother returning to the south. This program through the comrades of communism really helped many children and families. Of course this book is portraying several of the happier experiences.

the book is so well written. I appreciated that it took place mostly during Amerigo's childhood but loved the final part that takes place almost 50 years later.
