The Children's Train is nothing like I expected! Set during WWII, Amerigo Speranza who lives in poverty with his single mother in Italy is sent north on a train to live with another family who take him in with open arms. From the title, I never expected that he was being sent up north to a better atmosphere to live with a loving family. This is something that I never knew about WWII and I thank the author for providing this background for me.
Amerigo lives a good life with his new family, but it is short lived. He returns home to live with his mother in poverty once again. The first half of the book is written in simple language which is very fitting for the character that is telling the story. As Amerigo grows into a man, the prose changes and becomes much more eloquent and thought provoking. One short ride on the children's train had affected his entire life and gives him much to ponder. One can never truly leave their past behind. I am a sucker for historical fiction and this book leaves me wanting to read more!
