The Children’s Train
By Viola Ardone

Amerigo, is a young boy living in southern Italy, post war. Poverty stricken, his mother and the entire neighbor he lives in is desperate. When the communist party plans for the children on the south to be sent to live with families in Northern Italy, who are much more well off, Amerigo’s mother makes the difficult decision to send him.

Written from Amerigo’s perspective, we follow his journey along the train ride and life with his new family.

The struggles between his new life and the life he knew are difficult and drive his relationship with mother into the ground.

I give this 4/5 ⭐️‘s.
While the story is intriguing and a difficult one to digest as a mother, it was a tad hard to get into at times. I found myself bored at one point.
Overall though, I enjoyed Amerigo’s story and seeing the end result of how this shaped his life.
